Accident Forgiveness coverage may be beneficial to some policyholders

An auto accident can cause your low rate car insurance to go up 25-30 percent, however, if a policyholder meets certain qualifications as determined by the insurer, they may elect to add accident forgiveness coverage to their insurance policy. This type of benefit is often provided once a policyholder has been with the same insurance company for a certain period of time and has maintained an “accident free“ driving record for a predetermined duration.

Accident Forgiveness coverage keeps your best low car insurance rate from being increased to higher rates in the event of an at-fault accident and for the replacement of your car. When involved in an at-fault accident, accident forgiveness protects your driving record within the insurance company’s rating system.

The availability of accident forgiveness coverage differs by insurance company. The coverage is offered to the policyholder as a built-in feature to the car insurance policy or is purchased as an endorsement on the policy. Although an insured can inquire about accident forgiveness coverage, the insurer will make the final decision whether or not the accident will be forgiven.

There are two scenarios of an insurance company’s accident forgiveness coverage: total forgiveness or partial forgiveness of the accident. Total forgiveness means there will be no increase to the car insurance low priced rate. Partial forgiveness, however, may mean an increase in premium because of the change in rating the accident has had on an insured’s driving record. Both results will save on premium adjustments when remaining with the same insurance company.

Although accident forgiveness coverage protects an insured’s driving record within the insurance company’s rating system, it does not protect the discounts the policyholder may have been eligible for over the years. A policyholder could lose valuable discounts that come with being accident or claims-free.

Whether accident forgiveness coverage was purchased as an endorsement that incorporates accident forgiveness coverage into the policy or the insurer has offered it to its policyholder, the insured must inform any new insurer of all accidents – forgiven or not. Having an accident “forgiven” by an insurance company does not mean the accident will not be reported on your driving record. The accident is reported on your driving record even though the insurer offering the “forgiveness” may not consider the accident when calculating the car insurance low rate US premium.

Whether an insured lives in California or New York low insurance rate car accident forgiveness coverage can be quite beneficial to a policyholder. It is recommended to seek multiple quotes when searching for low rate car insurance.
